Painting in the Painting
A painting never is showing just reality, but what the painter chooses to show. When I
for instance paint a lake shore landscape, I avoid to include the Lake front Tower, as
I'm focusing on nature itself and not on its interconnection with urban structures. To
show this process of exclusion I painted my first "Painting in the painting". "Striving
for the Idyllic" is showing a spot at the beach of Bay View dominated by an ugly sewer
construction. Whereas I painted this part in acrylic I painted what I normally had
chosen as a rectangular detail in oil. This way I was able to show both aspects, the
idyllic and the ugly one at the same time.
This led to the idea to use this concept to unite also other contradictions. The mood of a
landscape is changing with season and day time. Why not show the different characters
together?
